Wednesday afternoon, the Cincinnati Reds announced that catcher Devin Mesoraco has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain. That’s the same shoulder Mesoraco injured last April, resulting in season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum. With Mesoraco out of the lineup, the Reds have recalled pitcher Ariel Hernandez from Triple-A Louisville. Mesoraco, who was splitting time behind the plate with Tucker Barnhart, last played on July 2 and has seen action in 40 games this season. Mesoraco’s hitting .234 with six home runs, 14 RBI and a .793 OPS. Mesoraco has already surpassed the number of games he played in the 2015 and 2016 seasons combined, with a torn labrum in his hip limiting the catcher to just 23 games in 2015. Mesoraco’s injury means more time behind the plate for Barnhart, who’s played in 58 games and is hitting .279 with one home run, 12 RBI and a .739 OPS this season. Another option is rookie Stuart Turner, who’s seen action in 16 games (five behind the plate) this season. Hernandez makes his return to the Reds’ active roster after a short stint with Louisville, where he made one appearance on July 3. In that game, Hernandez allowed just one hit over 1 2/3 innings of work against Indianapolis. Hernandez has seen the majority of his action with the Reds’ Double-A affiliate in Pensacola, where he has a 2-0 record in 24 appearances this season. Hernandez, who has a 2.18 ERA in 33.0 innings pitched for the Blue Wahoos, has appeared in five games for Cincinnati this season. Hernandez wasn’t the pitcher of record in any of those appearances, allowing two runs on two hits in nine innings of work with a 2.00 ERA.
