Canine Bowen Technique is a gentle, non-invasive therapy, where the therapist uses only their fingers and thumbs to make a series of moves over the dog’s fascia, muscles, tendons & ligaments that lie beneath their skin. This Canine version of the Bowen Technique was formalized by Ron & Sally Askew in 2001. Canine Bowen Technique does not use manipulation or needles. Holistic Therapy Canine Bowen Technique doesn’t set out to treat specific conditions. The therapist will treat the dog without referral to any diagnosed condition, aiming to help the dog back to a better balance, thus also addressing other problems caused as a result of the presenting condition. For example, a dog with rear leg lameness will try to carry as much of its weight as possible on its front end to help ease the discomfort – and in doing so can put too much strain on the shoulders and neck. A Canine Bowen Technique therapist will not try and diagnose any apparent problem , nor will they alter or prescribe any medicine. This should only be done by a qualified veterinary professional. What happens during a treatment session? Treatments are given in an environment where your dog feels relaxed – usually your own home or garden. A session will last from 45 to 60 minutes. There will be a discussion period, and a short time spent evaluating how your dog stands, moves, behaves etc, with notes taken so that comparisons can be made over time. The actual amount of Bowen your dog receives on the first session will depend on how they react, as well as their age and level of health. There are no formal breaks in the Canine treatment as in the original Human Bowen, but your dog is allowed to wander off to think about what has been done. They may come back immediately, have a short rest, or settle to sleep. Some dogs come back and place their bodies under the therapist’s hands saying ‘here next please’! It is their choice – they know their bodies. The therapist should respect this. Aftercare This is really a continuation of the treatment. Your dog’s body will continue to try and adjust for up to 72 hours after the treatment session, and so it is important to follow the advice you have been given to obtain the best results for your dog. The best way to let the Canine Bowen Technique work is to allow your dog to rest fully. How many treatments will my dog need? Most dogs will have lasting responses after 2 to 3 sessions – even long-standing pain has been seen to be relieved in many cases. Some dogs will need more sessions to gain lasting relief. The optimal gap between treatment sessions is a week, but anything between 5 and 9 days is acceptable. For long-standing conditions, many owners find it beneficial to have ‘top up’ treatments for their dogs every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain optimum health. For working and competition dogs a monthly maintenance session will help keep your dog in balance and free from injury. Can I mix Bowen technique with other therapies? The Bowen work done on your dog’s body is asking their tissues to undertake a repair process, and they must be allowed to do this without interruption or confusion for the work to be of full value to you. Please leave at least a week either side of your Bowen appointment should your dog need another form of physical or energetic therapy. Charges The charge per Canine Bowen Session is £35, and if a 2nd or further dogs are treated on the same visit, they are charged at £25 per dog. As the treatments are carried out at your own home, there is a travel charge as follows: Round trip of up to 5 miles – free of charge Round trip of 5 to 20 miles – £5 Round trip of 20 to 40 miles – £10 Round trip of 40 – 60 miles – £15 Charges per session The charge per Canine Bowen Session is £35, and if a 2nd or further dogs are treated on the same visit, they are charged at £25 per dog. Cancellation policy: Treatment sessions that have been booked, and are cancelled with less than 24 hours notice are liable to be charged the full fee.
